Writing Your Own Letter to Our Politicians

Updated: Sep 21

PLEASE NOTE: As our SaveMidtown campaign progresses we expect to implement an automated letter-writing campaign. In the meantime and/or if you'd like to share your specific views we offer this post.

Interested in sharing your views with or local and provincial leaders, the following are helpful tips to guide you in writing your letter.

  • Ensure you begin your letter by clearly stating the purpose. Example: I am writing to express my opposition/concern/disappointment with/regarding/ etc. (and then provide more details).

  • Your next sentence and those that follow it should be a concise description of the specific points you wish to state. In the case of our Save Oakville movement, here are a few points you may wish to include:

  • I (we) support increased density at Oakville’s GO Station area. What we do not support is hyper-density and the tall towers that do not provide suitable housing for people at all stages of life.

  • Our vision for Midtown is for reasonable growth; not over-development that will result in adverse impacts on those who will live there and those who work, visit, or traverse it.

  • Oakville can meet its growth commitments to the Province in Midtown and across Oakville without having to employ the level of density being proposed.

  • Liveability and a complete community can be achieved through the use of low and mid-rise built forms that will provide on-site outdoor green space, walkability and the inclusion of all of life’s daily needs. This kind of construction has the added benefit of being less costly thereby helping to deliver affordability.

  • Traffic on Trafalgar Road is already congested. The forecasted population growth in Midtown, the Trafalgar corridor, and Oakville North will create a traffic nightmare for anyone using Trafalgar Road, the Oakville Go station, and the QEW Trafalgar interchange.  Developing Midtown without a transportation master plan that addresses these issues is not acceptable.

The above are examples of statements you can include. If you’d like additional information to help you express other thoughts on Midtown, make a point of visiting our SaveMidtown Education Resources.

  • Personalise your letter/email. Explain how the issue affects you, your family or your community.

  • Indicate if you have ever voted for them, met them, supported their election campaign, etc. Thank them if you feel they have acted positively on a past issue.

  • Be steadfast in your letter, but be courteous. Don’t type in capitals. It does nothing to underscore the importance of your words and it is unprofessional.

  • Request a commitment to a specific action, and give a rationale for your request. Ask for the MPP/Premier/Minister/Mayor, etc. to respond to your letter.
